Sacramento, CA — October 31, 2025 — Today Nation’s Finest, a non-profit dedicated to supporting Veterans, and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), California State Society and Sacramento Chapter, joined Nation’s Finest clients to cut the ribbon at a newly remodeled duplex providing housing to women Veterans in Sacramento County.

The Sacramento Chapter secured a $40,000 Vivian’s Outreach to Women (VOW) grant from the National Society DAR to replace cabinets, countertops, flooring and appliances in both kitchens of the duplex providing transitional shelter for formerly unhoused women Veterans. The duplex provides safe housing for women Veterans and their children as they receive health and employment services before moving to permanent housing.

Grant funding from the DAR is available each year thanks to a gift from member Vivian Luther Schafer. When Mrs. Schafer passed away at the age of 105, her estate provided an endowment of $4 million to DAR to support indigent and unhoused women. Since 2019, grants to Veteran service partners up to $40,000 are awarded annually. Nation’s Finest, sponsored by the Sacramento Chapter, was one of six agencies in the country to receive grant funding in 2025.

Ribbon cutting of duplex kitchen renovations

California State Regent Christina Ramos increased the resources for Nation’s Finest through outreach statewide. At Ms. Ramos’ request, the Nation’s Finest team created an online wish list for furniture, kitchen and household items for the Sacramento duplex and transitional shelter on Southgate Drive. Over $6,000 in items were donated this summer by California Daughters for use by Veterans at these facilities.

Ms. Ramos hosted a State Regent’s Tea in partnership with the Chief Solano and Sacramento Chapters, raising an additional $15,300 for housing and support services. This, combined with a $10,000 grant from a Presidio Chapter member’s family foundation, brings the total contributed by the DAR to Nation’s Finest in 2025 to $71,300.

“For 135 years, Daughters of the American Revolution have preserved and promoted the American ideal,” noted Chris Flaherty, Chief Executive Officer at Nation’s Finest. “And this deeply meaningful and consequential investment from the California Daughters only further reaffirms that commitment. We could not ask for better partners in service to the country we love and the communities we call home.”

“We are thrilled to celebrate the newly renovated kitchens with the current residents today and to know that this grant-funded project will provide a welcoming, safe home to female Veterans for many years in the future,” said Christina Ramos, California State Regent. “There is no greater privilege than to serve our Veterans with our resources and time. We are so grateful for the steadfast devotion to protecting our nation by our former servicemembers and the team at Nation’s Finest who now care for them.”

“The duplex is a chance to grow, to rebuild my life and not be worried about where I’m going to sleep that night,” said one of the residents, a female Veteran housed by Nation’s Finest. “There’s so much space to store groceries and dishes! The countertops are spacious and make cooking so enjoyable.”
