As we begin a new year and welcome 2026, one hardworking Marine Corps Veteran from Santa Rosa, California, is celebrating a major milestone: completing parole and moving closer to his goal of “graduating” from a Nation’s Finest supportive services program this August.

For more than 20 years, Robert says he lived in the shadows, caught in a relentless cycle of addiction, anger, and incarceration. But in February 2024, that cycle reached a breaking point. Robert found himself standing outside a hotel room with three duffel bags, his dog, and a hollow feeling in his chest.

Just weeks earlier, he had been released from prison with a small nest egg that was quickly spent as he tried to rebuild his life from the ground up. With no permanent address, no vehicle, and a criminal record that slammed shut nearly every door he knocked on, the path forward felt impossible.

That’s when his parole officer told him about Nation’s Finest. Though Robert initially resisted, he eventually made the call that would change the course of his life.

Rebuilding with Purpose and Support

Over the months that followed, Robert began to find safety, stability, and healing. Even as he endured the devastating loss of his canine companion, he continued to move forward. He formed a friendship with another Veteran and moved into an apartment with them. He also enrolled in anger management courses and cognitive behavioral therapy, which helped him shift his mindset, regulate his emotions, and maintain steady employment on his path toward financial stability.

The Nation’s Finest team and my parole officer stood by me, and together, they helped me lift the crushing weight off my shoulders,” said Robert. “I no longer felt the need to prove anything to anyone but myself.

Today, Robert describes himself as whole, steady, and thriving, which is a stark contrast to the feeling of being a “jagged piece of glass” that he likened himself to in the beginning. He has a new dog and was able to pay for professional training. He owns a car, with insurance fully paid for the year, and with the help of his case manager, he successfully upgraded his discharge status and opened the door to additional benefits.

This month, Robert officially comes off parole, free to shape his own future. He’s also giving back, volunteering at his local church to serve meals to people experiencing homelessness. Robert calls it a “full circle moment that restores my dignity.”

For the first time in a long time, I am proud of the man I am,” he says.
