In recognition of Women’s History Month, Nation’s Finest pays tribute to the sacrifices women Veterans make for our country. The unique obstacles they’ve faced, from their time in service to life outside the military, require strength and resilience.
At Nation’s Finest, we witness firsthand the diverse challenges women Veterans and Veterans from all backgrounds face upon returning home. These range from mental and physical health issues to employment and housing struggles. Despite these obstacles, Veterans demonstrate incredible resilience.
Our staff’s effectiveness in helping Veterans stems from their own experiences. Take, for example, Amy Esposito, Site Director of Nation’s Finest in Sacramento, and her all-female leadership team. Their personal experiences shape their ability to support Veterans in need.
“The site leadership at NF-Sacramento is all-female,” says Amy. “I don’t think anyone has realized this before and how unique and amazing it is to have four women at the exempt level of leadership under one roof.”
The Difficulty in Asking for Help
Amy’s journey reflects the struggle many Veterans face in seeking help. Married young with two daughters in her early 20’s, she endured an abusive relationship and was reluctant to seek assistance from friends and family. Like many Veterans, she hesitated to admit that she needed a support system, fearing it would show weakness on her part.
“It is true what they say about not being able to help someone until they are ready,” says Amy. “I was stubborn… and rejected help for a few years.”
After an eye-opening moment, Amy realized change was necessary. Though she attempted to hide her pain for years, she finally found solace in her family’s support, which was a crucial step in her journey toward resilience.
“I owed it to my two young daughters to be a better, healthier person and show them how a human should be treated,” Amy explains. “I remember my heart just dropped when I came home and my mom simply said they were just waiting…They knew if they pushed for me to leave, I would dig my heels in more.”
Paying it Forward by Helping Others
Amy’s background in real estate led her to a local temp agency, where she connected Veterans experiencing homelessness to landlords looking for tenants. This job eventually led to a full-time opportunity at Nation’s Finest as a Housing Coordinator for our Sacramento-Southgate location.
Today, Amy is at the helm of an all-female leadership team in Sacramento, where one of her biggest passions is creating a safe and supportive culture for both her staff and the Veterans they serve. Being no stranger to adversity, and knowing how it feels to struggle in silence, she leans on her experiences to support others going through challenging times. Her hardships have made her a better leader and resource for those in need.
